Gold Jumps as Bernanke Speaks, Long Dull Summer Nears Its End.

THE PRICE OF GOLD leapt towards the start of New York trade on Friday, adding $10 inside five minutes and reversing the last fortnight's drop as European shares rose to fresh 10-month highs.

Unwinding all of August's 2.3% loss above $955 an ounce, gold also rose against the other major currencies, hitting one-week highs for Japanese, Euro and UK investors.

Chinese stocks rallied once more, but held 15% below their peak of Aug. 4th. Crude oil rose back above $73 per barrel.

Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke was due to open the Jackson Hole central-banking retreat just before US trading began.

"We believe there is once again some risk aversion creeping back into the market," says Walter de Wet at Standard Bank today.

"This could support the Dollar at current levels around $1.4300 against the Euro...[but] it should also support Gold."

"There's been a lot of investment demand recently," claimed a trader to Reuters this morning. "The reallocation of investors portfolios is still taking place and overall this is still favourable for gold."

So far this summer, however, lower volatility in the Gold Price has matched lower trading volumes in other financial markets.

Total volume at the New York and American stock exchanges fell to 4.41 billion shares on Wednesday, according to the Wall Street Journal, "down 16.2% from the 65-day average."

Gold dealing volumes in London – heart of the world's Gold Bullion market, where next weekend's Bank Holiday will mark the end of the vacation season – fell last month by half as much again as the typical June-to-July drop, down by 13.6% on London Bullion Market Association clearing stats.

The Gold Price in Euros has meantime become less volatile than at any time since May 2005 – and with the Dollar-Gold Price closely mapping the Euro/Dollar exchange rate, it's been less than half as volatile as gold priced in Dollars on a daily basis since the start of this month.

In the 10 weeks since June 8th, the Dollar Gold Price traded in a 7.4% range (some $67 an ounce). Gold priced in Euros has moved inside a 4.0% band (just €26 per ounce).

"[Gold has become] about as interesting as watching the Moody Blues in concert," says the anonymous London hedge-fund manager at the Fintag blog today.

"The waiting is the hardest part," writes a Canadian investment advisor in the Financial Post, calling 2009 "an exercise in frustration and puzzlement."

On the political front, meanwhile, Zimbabwe central-bank chief Gideon Gono yesterday proposed "the guarded reintroduction of the Zimbabwe Dollar where such a new currency will be fully backed by credible, tangible and locally available assets, such as gold, diamonds or platinum, among several other possibilities."

Since abandoning the Zimbabwean Dollar and switching to foreign currencies in July, the domestic economy has seen price-inflation fall from 231,000,000% per year to 1% month-on-month.

Russia's central bank – which chose to deny on Thursday that it's planning to devalue the Rouble any further, after watching it slide by one-third during the global financial crisis to date – yesterday reported a sharp increase in its Gold Bullion reserves.

Buying 13 tonnes of gold in July, an increase of some 3.7% from a month earlier, the Bank of Russia has grown its gold holding to 567 tonnes, the tenth largest in the world and larger by almost one-half from five years ago.

"I do not think [Gold] will replace everything else," said Russian finance minister Arkady Dvorkovich earlier this summer when asked about the Kremlin's policy on foreign reserves. "It would be naive and unjustified.

"But the growing role of gold amid the crisis could be a topic of discussions in the near future."

Opening the annual summit of central bankers at Jackson Hole, Wyoming today, US Fed chairman Ben Bernanke entitled his speech "Reflections in a Year of Crisis".

Two years after the global financial crisis began in Aug. 2007, new data from the Mortgage Bankers Association yesterday showed 13.2% of US mortgages are now either a month or more overdue, or in foreclosure, up from 9% this time last year.

Prime loans to lower-risk home buyers have risen from 44% of foreclosure starts to 58%. Prime fixed-rate mortgages, seen as the lowest-risk loans, accounted for one-third of foreclosure proceedings between April and July, compared with one-fifth during the same period in 2008.

This Precious Metal Is a Great Buy Right Now

In 51 countries, the words for silver and money are identical.

Silver has been used as money for longer and in more parts of the world than gold. And silver was money long before the idea of paper and electronic currencies.

With the government creating an unprecedented amount of paper and electronic money, you could find yourself much poorer if you don't own something that holds value through chaotic times. That's why metals like gold and silver make sense in times like this. They have intrinsic value, and they can't be created on a whim... There's only so much gold and silver to go around.

For now, gold is more popular with investors. That's the problem... Lots of people are turning to gold as an investment. They've pushed gold prices up to $950. Gold hit its all-time high in March 2008 at $1,004, and I expect it'll get there again soon.

But silver at about $13 is not even close to its all-time highs in the $50s (or inflation-adjusted highs above $1,000). As a result, gold is overvalued relative to silver (I'll explain this more in a moment).

Think about it this way: We've all seen ads from companies offering to pay you cash if you mail in your gold jewelry (don't go anywhere near those sharks, by the way). Have you seen any for silver? Me neither.

Right now, you would need 71 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. This difference in value is wildly out of step with centuries past. And it's not going to stay that way...

The U.S. Congress established its monetary system in 1792 and agreed to mint coins using both gold and silver. At the time, you needed 15 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. (In other words, what we call the "silver-to-gold ratio" was 15:1.)

That ratio was well established. In fact, 15 ounces of silver had roughly equaled an ounce of gold for the previous four centuries (at least according to my 1932 edition of the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Yearbook).

But then, in the early 20th century, governments around the world (notably ours) stopped backing their money with gold. People started hoarding gold, driving up its value, and the ratio went haywire, first cracking 71:1 during the Great Depression.

A variety of political and economic factors calmed the gold market and the ratio narrowed (though not to pre-Depression levels). It eventually bottomed out at 20:1 in the 1960s... when the U.S. stopped backing its currency with silver. Soon after, people bought up silver coins, driving the price of silver higher relative to gold.

Silver is Incredibly Cheap Relative to Gold

Guess what? Right now, enthusiasm for gold has pushed the ratio back to its 15-year high of 71:1... exactly where it was in the last Depression, when people were crazy for gold. If the ratio dropped back to 15:1, silver would sell for around $60... a 369% increase from current prices of $13.

I believe you will make a lot more money in silver over the next few years than you can holding ordinary stocks or mutual funds. And it's a no-brainer to hold silver versus gold.

Will the silver-to-gold ratio drop back to the pre-Depression ratio of 15:1? No one knows. But given the reasons for precious metals to rise, it's smarter to own the metal near its all-time low rather than the one near its all-time high. And I think the recent run in silver is just the beginning.

Sales and suspension of gold and silver coin or bullion coin sales by the U.S. Mint are becoming a regular part of doing business as overloaded refiners and mint facilities struggle to meet continuing high demand.

Unprecedented demand, a shortage of blanks, and restrictive policies and regulations continue to exacerbate what is almost becoming a chronic shortage of gold and silver coins authorized by the U.S. Mint.

The U.S. Mint has again "temporarily" suspended sales of almost all of its gold uncirculated and proof coins, along with nearly all of silver uncirculated coins because of the limited availability of blanks.

The mint no longer offers for sale the American Buffalo Gold Proof fractional coins and four coin sets are no longer available. Meanwhile the mint will no longer offer American Buffalo Gold Uncirculated Coins.

The 2009 American Buffalo One-ounce Gold Proof Coin is scheduled to go on sale in the second half of the 2009 calendar year after an acceptable inventory of 24-karat gold blanks can be acquired.

The U.S. Mint Online Product Catalog says production of the American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coins has been temporarily suspended due to the "unprecedented demand" for American Eagle Bullion Coins for which all available 22-K gold blanks are being allocated.

In the catalog, the government says it will resume the American Eagle Gold Proof and Uncirculated Coin Programs "once sufficient inventories of gold bullion blanks can be acquired to meet market demand for all three American Eagle Gold Coin products."

Congressionally authorized American Eagle Bullion coins are aimed at providing investors an effective way to invest in precious metals. Prices may change on a daily basis as the platinum, gold and silver markets may fluctuate. The mint does not sell the bullion coins directly to the public, but distributes them in bulk through a network of official distributors, who meet government financial and professional criteria, which must be attested to by an internationally accepted accounting firm.

So far this year, the mint has sold 700,000 ounces or 700,000 gold bullion coins, compared to last year's total sales of 860,500 ounces of gold or 1,172,000 bullion coins.

Federal laws and regulations say the gold must be newly mined in the United States. Only a handful of refineries meet the standards and regulations to produce the blanks for the coins.

Meanwhile, silver producers have found themselves equally frustrated by the inability of the U.S. Mint to meet the demand for silver coins. Production of the American Eagle Silver Proof and Uncirculated Coins has also been temporarily suspended because of unprecedented demand for the American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins.

The product catalog states, "Currently, all available silver bullion blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin Program, as the United States Mint is required by Public Law 99-61 to produce these coins ‘in quantities sufficient to meet public demand.'"

Thus far this year, silver bullion coin sales total 14,899,500 compared to last year's total sales of 19,583,500.

While gold and silver producers have repeatedly gone to government officials to get them to authorize an increase in the number of refineries which can produce the blanks and the facilities that can mint the coins, industry sources say they feel they have been stonewalled by mint officials who refuse to budge.

Among the U.S. manufacturers of blanks is Sunshine Minting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Stern-Leach of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Nearly all U.S. Mint gold coins at manufactured at West Point, New York at a remote site on military academy grounds.

U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White told Mineweb refiners are running 24-hours a day, seven days a week trying to meet demand for blanks.

Every coin collector should buy a coin magnifier for close-up views of their coins. These magnifiers come with a built in LED bulb and cost arnd 3-4 SGD in any local hardware shop. Approx: x7 Magnification. A pocket size digital weighing scale is a great way to weigh your coins, Silver coins are generally assayed by their weight and diameter by collectors who don't own assaying machines. I do not recommend hitting your coins or rounds with any objects to try to create that ping sound, I also do not recommend you do any acid and flame test on your coins. It would leave scratch marks on the rim or on the coin itself. I got my weighing scale from GMM Technoworld on Ebay Singapore (shipping was fast).

Canadian Silver Maples
Following the success of the maple leaf gold coins introduced in 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint started in 1988 to produce the one ounce Silver Maple Leaf coin.As with the gold versions which are struck in fine gold, the Silver Maples are struck in fine silver with a purity of 9999, or four nines. They hold the highest legal tender face value of 5 Canadian Dollar compared to other 999 fine Silver coins.

American Eagle Silver Coins are the only Silver coins whose weight and purity are guaranteed by the US Government. Each coin contains a minimum of one troy ounce of 999 pure silver. The design is based on the German borned Adolph A. Weinman's 1916 "Walking Liberty" half dollar, widely considered one of the most beautiful American coins ever minted in the millions. They hold a legal tender face value of 1 United States Dollar.

These fine coins come in monster boxes of twenty five tubes, and each tube contains twenty coins. Each coin measures 40.6mm in diameter and is 2.98mm thick.

Austrian Silver Philharmonics
First Minted by the 800 year old Austrian Mint in 2008, these newly minted Silver coins now add another fine collection to the world's most beautiful Silver coins. Struck with 999 fine silver in each coin, they are known world-wide to be extremely beautiful and pure. They state "one ounce fine Silver" in the German language and hold a legal tender face value of 1.50 Euros. These coins are widely known as European Silver coins.

Perth Mint Silver Coins
The Perth Mint first started minting the Kookaburra Coin in 1990 and The Koala In 2007.In 1999, the mint decided to issue a Chinese Lunar Year series of Silver coins following the success of the gold version lunars which started in 1996. Common known sizes in Singapore are 1oz,2oz,5oz,10oz and the kilo coin.Today these Perth Mint coins are highly popular and very sort after around the world.

British Silver Britannia
In 1997 the Royal British Mint started production of Silver bullion coins under the name “Silver Britannia”. The alloy used is Britannia silver with millesimal fineness 958 (95.8 %). The most common size collected is the 1 ounce Brit.
Silver Britannias have been released each year beginning in 1997, in 1997 and in all subsequent even-numbered years the reverse design has depicted a standing Britannia figure. Beginning in 1999 and continuing in odd-numbered years, a series of alternate, non-repeating depictions of Britannia have replaced the standing figure on the reverse.These fine coins are 40mm in diameter and is a must have for every collector. They are very pricey due to the limited mintage on them and are not so recommended as investment coins.

Chinese Silver Panda
China started minting one ounce Silver coins with a panda design in the early 1980s using silver(ag) with a purity of 999 fine.The legal tender face value is 10 Chinese Yuan.The reverse side of the Panda coin features the very beautiful Temple of Heaven building in Beijing and states in mandarin "Zhong Hua Ren Ming Gong He Guo".

Each year the panda coin features a different panda design, making this a very interesting and highly sort after collectable coin.These coins are minted by various mints in China, one of them being the Shanghai Mint. The coins depicted below are of two different years, one 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Mexican Silver Libertad
The Libertad is Mexico's treasure coin and is minted at Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the oldest Mint in North America, established in 1536. The coin design features two very prominent Mexican symbols. The Independence Angel - which is the main historic monument for the Mexican people and Mexican volcanoes (Lovers Peaks) in the background. The reverse carries the national seal of Mexico in the center, surrounded by previous seals used throughout Mexico's history. Mexican Libertads are .999 fine Silver and are legal tender coins denominated directly by (onza) instead of pesos.

These fine coins were first issued in 1949, about 30-40 years before most countries.
They are 40.6mm in diameter and weigh approx one ounce.Extremely hard to get nowadays, these are one of the coins I treasure most in my collection of Silver.VIVA LA MEXICO!!!

Singapore Junk Silver
Minted In the mid 1970s, these fine Singaporean coins offer an interesting collection to local and oversea coin collectors. These coins hold a legal tender face value of 10 Singapore Dollars and are 50% Silver. Like the American junk versions, these coins offer the cheapest alternative in Singapore to owning Silver.
There are various designs like the 168K limited mintage Statellite and a few others. These Singaporean coins are not highly recognized internationally like the SMLs and ASEs but do fairly well in Singapore. These coins measure 40mm in diameter and weigh about one troy ounce.

Privately Minted Silver Rounds
Privately minted Silver Rounds are Silver bullions that are minted in the shape of a coin. They are not called coins as they hold no legal tender value. These rounds are usually minted by private mints around the world and hold many different designs. They are usually cheaper than coins due to having no legal tender status and are not as popular as goverment minted coins. These rounds are a great way to stack more Silver in terms of "coins" and are very popular with hard money investors who buy them for the Silver content itself.Always remember to obtain only 999 fine Silver rounds should you wish to collect them.

Numismatic Coins and Gifts
The term numismatic means that the item is of certain sentimental/special value to the would-be collector. For example if a Gold coin were to be found from a ship sunken 700 years ago, that coin holds a certain extra special value compared to other modern day coins. Numismatic coins usually/always hold an extremely high premium due to the rare mintage,design or supply of it. It is the hobby of Kings or anyone who is very rich. These Coins can range from 50SGD to more than 1000000SGD. These coins are not investment bullions and should only be bought because you really like them. The 1933 Saint Gauden's Gold Double Eagle is the most expensive numismatic coin ever sold on earth. It was last sold in July 2002 for 6600000USD.

Precious Metals have also been known to make great gifts for thousands of years! What better way than to give real money in intricate beautiful designs to someone you care about. These gifts come in all shapes and sizes, some are very unique and just plain beautiful. But hold your breath, these "gifts" don't come at a low premium and are usually very expensive due to the workmanship on them. If you are investing in Silver, it is not recommended due to their prices compared to normal raw bullion like Maples and Eagles. Nonetheless, they make great pressies for almost everyone.

Silver Bars
Silver bars are a great way to store and stack larger amounts of Silver neatly, they also carry a lower premium compared to certain rounds and coins and are considered bullion as they have no legal tender status.Most bars (sadly) are handled quite roughly by their craftsman as they don't carry any numismatic value whatsoever. The value of a bar is not affected by its looks or how tarnished it is, rather it is affected by it's silver content and weight. If you are able to get a reasonable looking or even near perfect bar, consider yourself extremely lucky! :) I'm actually quite picky on how certain bars look when I source them out for others.Certain marks on the bars are caused by a die fault, and not human error.

Bars offer a slightly limited liquidity compared to rounds and coins,
(eg: Gold Kilo Bar 30KSGD, Gold One Ounce Coin 1400SGD). More people can afford one ounce compared to a whole kilo bar. If you apply that to Silver, it is the same thing. From my personal opinion, every collector should own at least a kilo bar of Silver. It gives you a feeling that coins/rounds can't provide. It feels heavy and very nice to HOLD! You may get the BAR bug...after holding one... :)

Some common brands well known internationally are Perth Mint,Australian Bullion Company,,Academy,JM,Engelhard,NWT,Pan-American,Sunshine,Silvertowne and a few others, I personally collect all of the above brands mentioned especially Academy, Silvertowne and Sunshine.
